Hagerman Fish Hatchery

Quick facts about Hagerman National Fish Hatchery Steelhead Trout:

Nearly 1.4 million steelhead smolts are produced at the Hatchery each year.  Some of these fish are marked with a coded wire tag (CWT).  The CWTs are recovered from the fish when they return as adults.  Based on recent CWT recoveries the following information was generated:

For every 1,000 smolts that are released, between 3 to 10 return to Idaho as Adult fish.

For every 60 to 200 adult hatchery fish that return from each raceway, 80% are caught by Anglers.

The Eastern Snake River Aquifer is an underground lake the size of Lake Michigan.  It takes 1 to 300 years for the water to reach the surface where it emerges throughout the Hagerman Valley in the form of thousands of springs.  This enormous Aquifer covers the entire Snake River or an area about 10,000 square miles.  Springs at the Hatchery are a clean, fresh, constant 59 degrees F, with a flow rate of approximately 30,000 gallons per minute.

This place really was huge - a sight to behold.

These Sturgeon were enormous - they looked like sharks.

We spied a bat house in the trees.

These are a couple of the "Thousand Springs" we saw on our drive home.  This is reserved for another day trip.
